Description of Structures

The proposed bridge structures are on the Tri-State Tollway between M.P. 0 (I-94/IL394) and M.P. 5.3 (167thStreet) in Cook county, Illinois. They are two mainline bridges and one Crossroad Bridge.The bridges required overall rehabilitation based on the Tollway.Other various roadway design work was also included in this contract.

Bridge # 115: I-294 under Halsted Street

The bridge is a four span structure consisting of precast prestressed concrete girders on reinforced concrete piers and stub abutments. The exterior spans, Spans 1 and 4, are 41’-0” long, and the interior spans, Spans 2 and 3, are 72’-4” long. The structure has an overall length of 226’-8” (centerline-to-centerline bearing) and an overall width of 94’. The bridge carries 2 northbound and 2 southbound traffic lanes over I-294 in addition to one ramp lane in each direction.

Bridge # 118: Northbound I-294 over Center Street

The bridge is a three span structure consisting of precast prestressed concrete I-beams on reinforced concrete piers and pile cap abutments. The structure has an overall length of 156’-10” (back-to-back abutments) and an overall width of 90’-1” (out-to-out superstructure). The bridge was built in 1957 and widened and rehabilitated in 1966, 1980, and 2007.

Bridge # 121: Southbound I-294 over Dixie Highway

The bridge is a two spanstructure consisting of precast prestressed concrete I-beams on a reinforced concrete pier and integral abutments. The structure has an overall length of 151’-0” (back-to-back abutments) and an overall width that varies between 102’-7” and 104’-5 7/8” (out-to-out deck). The bridge was built in 1957, widened in 1966 and 1979, and removed and replaced in 2005.

Descriptionof Work

Services provided were design and preparation of all construction plans of the mainline pavement and shoulders included earthwork cross-sections, horizontal and vertical alignment layout design, ditch profiles, and utility plan. Bridge inspections were performed and preparation of the bridge condition report with rehabilitation design plans were completed. HBM developedmaintenance of traffic, traffic barrier warrant analysesand construction staging plans with Maintenance of Traffic coordination.
