Description of Work

This project included the design of a segment of new controlled access expressway. The roadway is six lanes wide and located on unimproved and partially improved land in the County of DuPage within the suburbs of the Chicago near O’Hare International Airport. The roadway is located between Arlington Heights Road on the west and Lively Boulevard on the east. The expressway will be a tolled facility under the ownership of the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority.Local and frontage road improvements are included and will be under the jurisdiction of the local municipality or the County of DuPage. Some major features of the project included in this segment of improvements is the design of 1.62 miles of six lanes of pavement and shoulder, two new interchanges located at Wood Dale Road and Prospect Avenue, dual bridges over Salt Creek and Prospect Avenue, single bridge carrying Wood Dale Road over IL 390 (EOWA), retaining walls at various locations, new toll plaza, right-of-way acquisition, utility relocation, local road improvement, signalized intersection design,frontage road design, major drainage system design, includingdetention ponds, compensatory storage areas, watershed rerouting, major storm sewers, local sewer system rerouting and improvements, maintenance of traffic, safety improvements, lighting and highway signing. Construction will be via multiple construction contracts.

Description of Scope of Work:

HBM developed storm drainage and underdrain plans, specifications and details for 1.62 miles of expressway based on drainage analysis provided by URS and reviewed by HBM. Work included major and minor storm sewers, details of control structures, highway ditch plans and profiles, underdrain plans and outfalls structures into Salt Creek.

HBM designed Wood Dale Road Bridge over IL. Rte. 390 (Elgin O’Hare Expressway Western Access). Design services included the development of TS&L Plans, final Construction Plans and Special Provisions for the new bridge. The proposed bridge will be a two span structure with integral abutments, wingwalls and center pier. The bridge is considered a Gateway Structure. In cooperation and cost sharing with the City of Wood Dale, the bridge includes a variety of unique architectural feature in order to enhance the aesthetic. In orderto accommodate local traffic on Wood Dale Road during construction, the bridge will be constructed in stages and temporary soil retention system will be used. The bridge alignment is on tangent. Other structural tasks include the design of earth retaining walls at various locations.
