Description of Work
HBM Engineering Group, LLC performed routine visual inspections. Elements to be inspected included the deck, superstructure and substructure elements. All inspections were performed in accordance with the AASTHO Manual of Maintenance Inspection of Bridges(current edition), Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Structure Information and Procedure Manual, and National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS).
Throughout the inspection, careful field notes were recorded on the field inspection reporting forms. Color photographs were taken to record the methods of inspection and physical conditions encountered. Field notes, sketches, and photographs were incorporated into the inspection report to document findings and to provide information for use during future inspections and rehabilitation work.
The two Tied Arch bridges are designated “Fracture Critical” for the purposes of IDOT and FHWA critical bridge inventory. All non-redundant elements of these structures received a visual inspection of conditions. The fracture critical inspection was performed during the routine inspection per IDOT and FHWA requirements. HBM Team completed and forwarded the fracture critical inspection documentation to IDOT following these inspections.
The inspection procedure was in accordance with all up to date standard references. The main tied arch spans and approach spans were inspected where possible using a snooper, aerial bucket trucks, boat, man-lift, or ladders to gain access for close visual inspection. The Team Leadersfor fracture critical bridge inspections all attended the 3-day NHI-Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques for Steel Bridges Class.
